Around fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report early analysis indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; investigators are presently not aware of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.
An important representative said the incident rendered him without words and needed to be solved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in five years prior.
